Diana in Trash

FINALLY, I got my mannequin! YAY ME!!!! To understand the depth of my happiness, let me explain the story! I first heard saw this little baby when I was in Durban (epic time, btw) and I was in awe! It is a dressmaker mannequin that assists designers with fittings. So instead of meeting up with your client to do fittings, you adjust this little baby to the size of your client and VOOLA! Heavenly creation!
ANYWAY, couldn’t buy it in Durban as I was broke. Bummer. But I kept the mannequin in my thoughts! For months and months searched for a reasonably priced one until, finally, I found one! AND, as you can see, it is red! I simply LOVE red! It is such a sexy colour! Is it not a beauty? Hehe

Then came along project “trash”! I had to make a dress out of trash as part of a recycle theme for a girl, and now my mannequin’s first “outfit” ended up being trash. My poor Diana! Yes, I named it Diana, but that is also the name of the brand that manufactured it so it seemed fitting. Not to mention the fact that it has a name-tag-looking sticker on it written ‘Diana’J .

Funny enough I am also happy this was the Diana’s first outfit, because it was quite fun making it, Lol! This mark the first time I have ever made a dress out of anything that is not fabric! There was a lot of complications surprisingly and therefore, a lot of cursing from my end, but the job was done. I even made two! Check these two beautiful ladies rocking them out…

…Might be trash, but sure looked classy!

BLOCK the Colour Blocking!!!!!!

Okay, so this subject I am VERY passionate about! As usual, a trend comes out, and as usual, every Jane, Beth and Sally (errbody) makes it a mission to follow that trend in the most optimal way possible! No problem. However, with colour block it has become a MAJOR problem! This is mainly because people do not understand how to do it correctly! I just think it is about that time SOMEONE clarifies this. Luckily I stumbled across a whole article about the art of colour blocking from makeupandbeauty.com and I agreed with everything Naina wrote, so much so that I am just going to quote her!

The Technique:

Color block fashion is one of the hottest new trends for the season. It combines the use of two or more blocks of colour in an ensemble. This could be for a top, bottom, tunic, a dress and even a handbag or shoes. Simply it means – creating an outfit by putting areas or blocks of solid color next to each other. It can include monotone, bright colours, muted colors, contrasting and complimentary colors. Clothes, shoes, handbags and accessories can all feature color block designs or can make up different blocks of color to be put together for a color block outfit.” (http://makeupandbeauty.com/color-blocking-fashiontrend-alert/)

Please note the words contrasting, complimentary, monotone, muted, bright colours!  Anyway, here are a few examples:

The Rules:
“Since they often involve the use of bright colours or many different colours together, it is easy to go wrong with it. The best way to pair colour block trends whether it’s for shoes, a tunic or a top is with other basic colours such as black, white, brown and gray. This way your colour block will pop out more and look more polished.
Do not combine more than three to four colors. It’s not that it doesn’t look nice, but it looks very ‘ramp’ish. Moreover more colors will keep cutting your body shape here and there making it a not so beautiful sight.
Never ever ever combine two color blocked items. This is the worst thing to do to this trend.(http://makeupandbeauty.com/color-blocking-fashiontrend-alert/)

Also take note of how EASY it can be to mess things up and end up looking like a mess!!!!! Brace yourselves for this epic disaster:

Now if fashion designers get it wrong sometimes, can you even begin to imagine the horror I see here at varsity? If not, don’t worry, will be getting pics soon…my eyes cannot be the only ones suffering!

La Inspiration

Anyone who has ever known me for more than ten minutes knows that my love for fashion runs more deeply than dressing nicely. I want to create it and meet co-creators. Ultimately, fashion school is the one form of education that I actually willingly want to receive and one I plan to receive next year.  To my horror, I stood blankly when I was asked by a fellow fashion-lover who my favourite designers were. How does one claim to love fashion and not have a favourite designer? That utter shame immediately got me thinking and I can gladly say that I have my top three:

1)      Giorgio Armani. The every aspect of fashion is carefully weaved into a single garment of this label I absolutely admire. The fact that those aspects are woven in with artistic flavour is simply remarkable. I can honestly say I have never looked at a Giorgio Armani outfit without feeling a sense of enlightenment and awe. Love it!

2)      Elie Saab. Sheer elegance. Every woman who wears an Elie Saab gown is sure to feel like a queen! Always focusing on lace details and flowing structures, Elie knows how to make a woman feel special.

3)      Givenchy. Besides the sexy-sounding name, who can’t fall in love with this fashion label? It is what every fashionista aims to be in life: bold. Always dealing with contrasts between the structures of the clothing and the colours, making for some eye-catching stylish clothing, or rather should I say couture?

If I had these three labels in my closet, fashion faux pas would be something completely alien to me.  Seeing any designs of theirs just continues to inspire me to do more and to be more!!!!

Mznasi Dreamgirls

I just love the idea of jumping into an interesting project; however I tend to lose interest and all my projects end up incomplete. Beginning of this year, I made a resolution to finish whatever it is I started! So far I am keeping to this resolution. One of my most interesting projects was my “Chicago Dreamgirls” project!
For this I was required to design and make six dresses for a city resident play at UFS. The theme of the play was Chicago: Mzansi style! It was a wonderful play and I had the opportunity to be a part of it! ANYWAY, I designed the six dresses keeping in mind the theme. I also decided to make them colourful...every showgirl needs to have an eye-blinding outfit right?
After a week of mistakes, corrections sweat and me cursing at my sewing machine, I was finally done! Simple glamour was accomplished! All through sequenced material and string material for the two main ladies! It was quite the challenge! String material is not fun to work with, but the end result is quite amazing!
To add a bit of SA flavour, the girls ended up wearing black sneakers with their dresses instead of the usual accessory: heels. This was quite funky and unexpected!
To cut the long story short: I made six simple dresses that I am proud of.....not too mention the fact that these six dresses made me some much needed and wanted money! Lol!
